Bella's First Snow Adventure at Perisher: From Blizzard to Blue Skies

Some family holidays are memorable because everything goes perfectly. Others become unforgettable because they don't.

Our recent school holiday trip to Perisher in Australia's Snowy Mountains was one of those true adventures. We traveled down from Sydney with close friends, excited to spend a few days on the slopes together. It was an especially meaningful trip because it would be five-year-old Bella's very first time seeing real snow.

None of us expected Mother Nature to have such dramatic plans for us!

A Magical First Encounter with Snow

Watching a child discover snow for the first time is something truly magical.

Everything fascinated Bella—the crisp mountain air, the sparkling white landscape, the bright ski gear, and the excitement of watching skiers glide down Front Valley. Even pulling on heavy ski boots felt like a grand adventure to a five-year-old. She looked around with wide eyes, asking a million questions before heading to her very first ski lesson.

When the Mountain Decides the Schedule

Unfortunately, mountain weather moves by its own rules. Our first morning brought almost every winter element imaginable:

  • Heavy falling snow & rain mix

  • Strong alpine winds

  • Near-zero visibility as thick clouds rolled over the ridge

For safety reasons, most of the high chairlifts had to close. Only the lower T-bars remained running, which meant school holiday crowds quickly funneled into the same few lift lines.

Instead of endless runs down the mountain, much of our morning was spent patiently standing in 20-to-30-minute T-bar queues. Yet, despite the biting wind and cold hands, the atmosphere remained amazingly warm. Parents cheered on nervous children, friends chatted, and everyone shared a collective sense of alpine camaraderie..

From Grey Blizzards to Brilliant Blue Skies

One of the most remarkable things about skiing in Australia's Snowy Mountains is how rapidly the weather shifts.

Within minutes, the heavy storm clouds began to break apart, revealing patches of deep sky. Before long, bright sunshine flooded the resort, turning grey slopes into a sparkling white wonderland beneath a brilliant Australian blue sky.

The view across Kosciuszko National Park was breathtaking—a gentle reminder of why our family keeps returning to Perisher year after year.

Bella's Big Milestone: From Nervous Beginner to Independent Skier

At the start of her lesson, Bella didn't even know how to click into her skis. But thanks to the incredible patience and expert guidance of Perisher's ski instructors, her initial nervousness quickly turned into pure confidence.

By the end of the day, she was proudly gliding down the beginner slope all on her own with the biggest smile on her face.

Why Perisher Ski Instructors Make a Difference

Teaching young kids to ski isn't just about technique—it's about building trust. Working in freezing temperatures, howling winds, and shifting blizzards requires incredible dedication, and the instructors at Perisher consistently deliver memories that last a lifetime.

🍬 A Sweet Treat at Mid Station

One delightful surprise during this trip was discovering the new lolly shop at Perisher Mid Station.

After a cold morning battling wind and celebrating Bella's successful ski runs, stopping in for a bag of colorful treats was the ultimate reward. It was a simple touch, but sometimes it is these small, joyful moments that children hold onto long after the snow melts.

💡 Practical Tips for Parents Taking Kids Skiing for the First Time

  1. Book Lessons Early: Ski school spots fill up quickly during NSW school holidays. Booking in advance guarantees your child a spot with professional instructors.

  2. Dress in Quality Layers: Keep kids warm with moisture-wicking thermal base layers, a fleece mid-layer, and a waterproof outer jacket. Warm hands make for happy skiers!

  3. Embrace Breaks: Don't hesitate to head indoors for hot chocolate when cold winds set in. Keeping energy high is key for young children.

  4. Pack Spare Gloves & Socks: Snowy falls happen often with beginners; having a dry pair of gloves ready for the afternoon makes a huge difference.

Memories That Matter Most

As we packed up our gear and prepared for the drive back home, no one was talking about the long lift queues or the closed chairlifts.

Instead, our conversation was filled with laughter about Bella—her wide eyes seeing snow for the first time, her determination during her lesson, her proud solo run down the slope, and our sweet stop at the Mid Station lolly shop.

The weather wasn't perfect, but the family memories were.
