Travelling from Milan to Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise by Train: Our Seven-Hour Journey

Leaving Milan behind, we began the next stage of our European family trip: travelling to the ski resort of Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise in the French Alps. After spending several enjoyable days exploring the top sights in Milan, it was time to exchange the busy city streets for snow-covered mountain peaks.

Departing from Milano Porta Garibaldi

We caught our first train from Milano Porta Garibaldi railway station. Travelling with several large suitcases made us conscious of every platform change. Unfortunately, the signage for our departing train was less clear than expected, leaving us uncertain about our platform placement.

Key lesson learned: When platform information is unclear, ask a station employee immediately rather than relying solely on display boards. Navigating last-minute platform changes with heavy luggage and a family creates unnecessary stress. For future trips, arriving early, confirming the train number, and verifying the destination with staff before moving luggage is essential.

Navigating Train Transfers in France

Our journey required changing trains before reaching Bourg-Saint-Maurice. One key transfer point was Chambéry–Challes-les-Eaux, the main railway hub serving the Chambéry area.

The entire journey—including platform waiting times and rail connections—took approximately seven hours. While it made for a long travel day, watching the urban landscape yield to alpine scenery made the transition seamless.

Arriving at Bourg-Saint-Maurice

Bourg-Saint-Maurice served as our final rail stop and the primary transport hub for Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise.

After retrieving our luggage, we took a local taxi directly to the resort. Taxis are readily available at the station exit, and the service was reliable. The drive up the mountain takes between 45 to 60 minutes, depending on weather conditions and winter road traffic.

Checking In at Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise

We arrived at our destination, CGH Résidences & Spas Les Fermes de Sainte-Foy, where our extended family was waiting. The warm glow of the wooden alpine chalets against the snow offered a peaceful contrast to the bustle of Milan.

The following morning opened with a fresh blanket of snow covering the balcony, surrounding fir trees, and mountain roads—a classic alpine start to our stay.

Travelling from Milan to Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise by public transport was manageable, but it required patience and some preparation.

For anyone planning a similar journey, these are the main lessons from our experience:

  • Arrive Early: Reach Milano Porta Garibaldi with extra time to account for platform updates.

  • Verify Train Numbers: Always cross-reference the train number alongside the destination name.

  • Luggage Preparation: Pack efficiently so every family member can handle their own luggage during quick transfers.

  • Pre-Book Mountain Transport: Reserve a taxi or transfer service from Bourg-Saint-Maurice in advance during peak ski season.

  • Monitor Local Conditions: Build extra buffer time into your schedule for potential winter road delays.
