Life in Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise: Family Meals, Snowy Evenings and Après-Ski Relaxation

The lights of Sainte-Foy made the snowy village feel like a fairytale

After several incredible days on the slopes, our family discovered that off-mountain life in Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise was just as memorable as the skiing itself. Booking a spacious self-catering apartment at CGH Résidences & Spas Les Fermes de Sainte-Foy gave our extended group a cozy base to unwind each afternoon.

From simple pressure-cooker dinners to quiet night walks along snow-covered paths, these slower moments quickly became the highlights of our trip. If you are planning your own journey, you can read about our scenic train journey from Milan to Sainte-Foy to see how easily accessible this Alpine village is by rail.

A Warm Place to Return to After Skiing

Returning to a warm, well-equipped residence after hours in the freezing mountain air makes a world of difference for a large family.

Les Fermes de Sainte-Foy features comprehensive spa facilities, including a heated indoor swimming pool, traditional saunas, and steam rooms. Soaking in the warm pool or relaxing in the sauna was the perfect way to soothe tired legs before gathering around the dining table. The spacious living area provided plenty of room for everyone to recap their day, share stories, and plan the next morning’s runs.

Why Missing Home Cooking Saved Our Budget

During the first few days of our trip, we relied on local takeaway options like pizzas and burgers. While convenient, eating out constantly gets expensive for a large group, and we soon found ourselves craving simple, wholesome home cooking.

Sainte-Foy has two local mini-supermarkets stocked with fresh regional ingredients. We sent the kids out through the snowy streets to pick up groceries—an ordinary daily task that felt like an adventure in an Alpine winter setting.

Our apartment kitchen came equipped with an old-style stove pressure cooker. While unexpected for a holiday rental, it turned out to be the ultimate time-saver for feeding a hungry crowd.

Simple One-Pot Meals: Pressure-Cooker Dinners

1. Roast Pork & Root Vegetables

For our first homemade meal, we combined locally bought pork roast with seasonal vegetables in the pressure cooker. Once cooked until tender, we gave the pork a quick sear in a frying pan to crisp the edges and lock in flavour. Paired with hot vegetables, it was a comforting, low-fuss feast after a cold day on the slopes.

2. Alpine Chicken Curry

Later in the week, we prepared a one-pot chicken curry. We cooked whole chicken cuts and root vegetables together in the pressure cooker with a mild curry sauce, serving it hot over jasmine rice.

Travel Tip: When traveling with a large group, cooking self-catering meals two or three nights a week reduces restaurant costs significantly and eliminates the stress of coordinating peak-season dining reservations.

Tips for Dining Out in Sainte-Foy

We also made sure to sample the local culinary scene. Sainte-Foy is a popular destination during peak winter and school holiday periods, meaning the smaller mountain restaurants fill up quickly.

  • Book Ahead: Reserve your table at least 2–3 days in advance, especially if you have a group larger than four.

  • Dress in Layers: Walking to restaurants in sub-zero temperatures requires heavy outerwear, but cozy dining rooms are well-heated inside.

Card Games, Conversation and Laughter

After dinner, everyone settled into the apartment. Some family members caught up with one another while others gathered around the table to play card games.

With busy lives and family members living in different places, it is not often that so many of us can spend an entire week together. The card games were not planned as an important part of the holiday, but they became some of the moments we remember most fondly.

Sunny Lunches and Mountain Atmosphere

During our ski days, we often stopped at a café or mountain bar for lunch or a quick drink. On misty or snowy days, going inside provided a welcome break from the cold. On a bluebird day, sitting outside was wonderful—resting in the sunshine while looking across the snow-covered chalets and mountains.

Exploring Sainte-Foy Beyond Downhill Skiing

Sainte-Foy is equally charming for non-skiers or those taking a rest day from the piste. The resort offers a variety of winter activities:

  • Marked Snowshoeing Trails: Scenic trails run through the surrounding forests, offering panoramic views of the Tarentaise Valley.

  • Winter & Nordic Walking: Maintained paths allow visitors to explore the snow-covered landscape safely on foot.

  • Mountain Dining: You can take pedestrian lift passes up to sunlit outdoor terraces to enjoy lunch with a view while meeting up with skiers in your party

Cherished Evenings and Fairytale Streets

The evening stroll back to our chalet was pure magic. Fresh snow blanketed the traditional timber roofs, while decorative street lamps illuminated the quiet village pathways.

Back inside, the evenings were filled with conversation, hot drinks, and lively card games around the dining table. In the rush of daily life, having an entire week where family members of all ages could slow down and connect in one place was the true highlight of our holiday.

More Than a Ski Holiday

We originally travelled to Sainte-Foy for a family skiing holiday, but the experience became about much more than skiing. It was about warming up together after a cold day, finding ingredients in a small supermarket, improvising meals with an old pressure cooker, walking beneath the village lights, and laughing around a table late into the evening.

Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise gave us beautiful snow and memorable skiing, but it also gave our family the time and space to reconnect. Those simple evenings together were truly the warmest part of our snowy holiday.
